The British government has urged FIFA to investigate Argentina’s national football team after players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) following their 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England.

Business Minister Peter Kyle described the display as an “egregious violation” of FIFA regulations, arguing that political messages should have no place on the field of play.

Backing the minister’s position, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said while England may have lost the match, Britain’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands remains unchanged.

Kyle urged football’s world governing body to launch a full investigation, stressing that the World Cup should remain free from political demonstrations.

FIFA had not issued an official response to the incident at the time of reporting.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of the long-running sovereignty disagreement over the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina. Argentina invaded the British Overseas Territory in 1982, but Britain regained control after a brief war that claimed the lives of 649 Argentines and 255 British personnel.

Tensions had already risen before the semi-final, with Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel referring to the English as “usurping pirates.”

Following the match, Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced that Buenos Aires had lodged a formal diplomatic protest over the passage of the British warship HMS Medway near the Falkland Islands.

Quirno said the July 13 protest note, submitted to the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, accused the vessel of passing through what Argentina considers its territorial waters without prior notification and in violation of bilateral agreements.
