Premier League side Chelsea have signed veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford on a two-year contract, adding experience to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new season.
The 36-year-old former Liverpool captain completed his move to Stamford Bridge on Monday after Brentford agreed to end his contract last week following Chelsea’s interest.
Henderson said he was excited to join Chelsea and work under Alonso, describing the move as an opportunity he could not reject.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction,” Henderson said.
The midfielder added that he was ready to contribute both on and off the pitch.
Henderson joins Chelsea with a wealth of experience, having won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Liverpool. He left Liverpool for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before moving to Ajax six months later.
He returned to the Premier League with Brentford last year.
The midfielder, who has earned 91 England caps, was part of the country’s 2026 World Cup squad but played limited minutes after suffering an injury during the tournament.
Henderson’s arrival comes days after Chelsea also signed veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton as Alonso continues to strengthen his squad.
Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, will begin their new campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.
