The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached a sixth province, Bas-Uele, after health officials confirmed a fatal case in the northeastern capital of Buta.

Authorities discovered that a person died from the virus in the previously unaffected region, raising urgent fears that contact with the patient could trigger further local transmissions.

Delayed case detection, ongoing conflict, and overburdened health services continue to accelerate the virus’s spread far faster than in prior outbreaks.
