Congolese Court Upholds President Sassou-Nguesso’s Re-election

A Constitutional Court in Congo has upheld the re-election of longtime leader Denis Sassou-Nguesso, two weeks after provisional results announced a widely expected landslide victory in the Central African country.

Congo’s March 21 election was boycotted by the main opposition and marred by the death of Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas who garnered 7.84 percent of the vote.

Sassou-Nguesso has been in power for an accumulated 36 years, first taking the helm in 1979, making him one of the world’s longest serving leaders.

Re-elected President Sassou Nguesso will be sworn in in the coming days for a fourth five-year term.
