Congo President, Sassou Nguesso, Sworn-in for Fifth Term

Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso has taken the oath of office for another term, extending his 36-year accumulated rule.

President Denis Sassou won 88.4 percent of the vote in the March 21 election. He was sworn in the capital Brazzaville on Friday.

The President will begin a new five-year term with the aim of curbing the country’s reliance on oil and to grow more food.

His main contender, Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas, died from Coronavirus, a day after the elections.

Even though the country has gone through botched up debts under his decades-long rule, President Nguesso plans to boost industry and revive the country’s decrepit railways.
