Congo Swears-in President Dennis Sassou the Fifth Time

Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso took the oath of office for another term this afternoon in the capital Brazzaville, extending his 36-year accumulated rule.

President Denis Sassou Nguesso won 88.4 percent of the votes at the polls boycotted by the main opposition. The 77-year-old says he plans to boost agriculture, industry and revive the country’s decrepit railways.

The rising debt million million million of the country has been a huge concern to analyst over the years. In a report by Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in 2018, it was reported that Congo earned 1.65 billion euros in 2018 from crude sales and 448 million euros went to China to pay for Chinese-built infrastructure, and another 340 million went to paying off pre-financing agreements with traders Glencore and Trafigura.
