The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which claimed the lives of military personnel and other people on board.

Musa said the investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and help strengthen operational safety measures across Nigeria’s military aviation units.

“A comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate crash has been ordered to ascertain the cause and ensure all necessary operational safety protocols are reinforced across our military aviation units,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Musa Mourns Fallen Military Personnel

Musa described the incident as a moment of profound grief and said the loss of the military personnel was an “irreparable blow” to the Armed Forces and the country.

“These fine officers and men exemplify the highest standards of military professionalism, loyalty, and commitment to the defence of our Fatherland.”

The minister extended his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the leadership of the Armed Forces, and the families, colleagues and loved ones of the fallen personnel.

He also expressed sympathy to the families of civilians who were on board the aircraft.

“Our hearts also go out to the families of the civilians on board the ill-fated aircraft; we share your grief,” Musa said.

He prayed for the repose of those who died and for strength for their families, the military community and Nigerians.

Tinubu Orders Investigation, Declares Mourning

President Bola Tinubu has also ordered the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash. The President said the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it went down near Igbokoda.

Tinubu described the crash as a painful moment for the Armed Forces and the country, adding that military personnel put their lives on the line daily to protect Nigeria.

The President also declared three days of national mourning and directed that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of those who died, according to the statement cited by the source.

The Nigerian Air Force had earlier confirmed the crash and said search and rescue operations were activated in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency agencies.

The cause of the crash has not been established, pending the outcome of the investigation.
