Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia gubernatorial election on Tuesday, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history according to projections from CNN and NBC News.

The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson, flipping the office to Democrats after more than two decades of Republican rule.

Outgoing Governor Brian Kemp could not seek re-election due to term limits.

The victory delivers a direct setback to President Donald Trump, who endorsed Jackson in July and stumped alongside him in the Atlanta suburbs during the final weeks of the campaign.

Bottoms, who served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 before taking senior advisory roles in the Biden administration, campaigned on promises to expand Medicaid, protect voting rights, and lower family living costs.

Former President Barack Obama also rallied for Bottoms in Georgia late in the race.

Jackson poured over $100 million of his personal fortune into his campaign after defeating Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in a June primary runoff.

Campaigning as a political outsider raised in Georgia’s foster care system, Jackson failed to hold the state for Republicans.

Further cementing the Democratic gains, incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff defeated Republican Congressman Mike Collins to win re-election, confirming Georgia’s position as a fiercely contested battleground state.
