Dortmund Beat Hoffenheim 3-2

Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri played a key role as Borussia Dortmund came from two goals down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Hoffenheim dominated the opening hour and built a two-goal lead through Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lemperle before Dortmund mounted a late comeback.

Nwaneri, who joined Dortmund on a season-long loan from Arsenal on deadline day, was introduced after half an hour in his Bundesliga debut.

Serhou Guirassy pulled one back shortly after the hour mark before setting up Fabio Silva five minutes later as Dortmund levelled the score.

With four minutes of normal time remaining, Nwaneri cut in from the left and fired towards goal. His effort took a significant deflection off Hoffenheim defender Albian Hajdari and went into the net to complete Dortmund’s comeback.

Dortmund manager Niko Kovac praised the 18-year-old’s contribution after the match.

“I liked what I saw,” Kovac said. “That’s what we brought him in for. Maybe it wasn’t officially his goal, but he created it.”

Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history when he made his Arsenal debut as a teenager.

Elsewhere, Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg maintained their impressive start to life in Germany’s top flight with a 4-3 comeback victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Gladbach led 3-1 in the second half, but Elversberg fought back to level through Felix Keidel before Maurice Krattenmacher scored in stoppage time to secure victory.

Elversberg, from a town with a population of about 13,000, had opened their campaign with a surprise 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen responded by thrashing Union Berlin 4-0, with Equi Fernández and Facundo Medina putting the hosts two goals ahead before half-time. Jarell Quansah then assisted Patrik Schick for the third, while Ibrahim Maza completed the rout.

Meanwhile, Niclas Füllkrug scored his second goal in three matches since returning to Germany to help Werder Bremen beat RB Leipzig 3-1.

Freiburg also maintained their perfect start with a 1-0 away victory over promoted Paderborn.
