Edo Assembly Passes College Establishment Bill

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill repealing the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Law, 2019, paving the way for the establishment of the Edo State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology.

Lawmakers approved the bill after a clause-by-clause consideration by the Committee of the Whole House. Following the adoption of the committee’s report, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed the Clerk of the House to transmit clean copies of the bill to Governor Monday Okpebholo for assent.

The legislation establishes the new institution, specifies its commencement date, outlines the composition of its Governing Council and Academic Board, provides for its funding, and sets out other administrative provisions.

During deliberations, lawmakers adopted an amendment moved by Kaycee Osamwonyi Atu and seconded by Sunday Ojiezele. The amendment annexes the First Schedule, contained on pages 26 and 27 of the bill, to support its implementation.

The House also received a letter from Governor Okpebholo, dated 26 June 2026, requesting the confirmation of Martins Anayochukwu Oli as a commissioner-designate.

Speaker Agbebaku referred the nomination to the House Standing Committee on Government House, Rules and Business for screening and directed the committee to submit its report within two weeks.

In a related development, the Speaker sympathised with residents affected by recent heavy rainfall across Edo State, noting that the downpour destroyed at least five houses and damaged property worth millions of naira. He assured affected residents of government support.

Agbebaku also extended the Assembly’s condolences to the families of children who lost their lives during the devastating rainfall in Lagos on Monday.

The House adjourned plenary until Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
