Enekwechi Makes History at Commonwealth Games

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has made history as the first Nigerian to win the men’s shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after a record-breaking performance in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 33-year-old secured the title on Thursday with a winning throw of 21.07 metres at Scotstoun Stadium, claiming Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the event.

The Olympic Games confirmed the victory on its X handle, saying, “GOLD for Nigeria – Chukwuebuka Enekwechi takes the W in the men’s shot put final!”

Enekwechi produced the decisive throw on his penultimate attempt to overtake defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who had earlier taken the lead with an opening throw of 21.03m.

England’s Scott Lincoln finished third with a throw of 20.99m to claim the bronze medal.

The victory marked a major comeback for Enekwechi, who won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games but finished fourth at the Birmingham 2022 edition.

The African record holder had already shown his form during qualification, securing a place in the final with a single throw of 20.03m to top Group B.

Enekwechi, one of Nigeria’s most consistent track and field athletes, has also won five African titles during his career.

His historic victory increased Nigeria’s medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to 15 medals, including eight gold, five silver, and two bronze.
