A female officer has died after being hit by a vehicle belonging to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the incident to the Cable News on Saturday.
Video clips circulating online show the moment the accident occurred during what appeared to be a coordinated demonstration.
The officer was knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle as it manoeuvred during the drill.
The vehicle eventually stopped, after which colleagues and bystanders rushed to lift it and pull her free.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and evacuated her from the scene.

Confirming the death, Babawale said the corps had begun internal procedures following the incident.
He stated that the agency had lost a personnel member during the exercise and that senior officials were on their way to visit the deceased’s family to offer condolences.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He added that the NSCDC would release a comprehensive statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident and the steps being taken in response.
The officer’s name had not been officially released as of the time of this report.
