A five-storey building collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos State on Thursday, leaving an unspecified number of people trapped beneath the debris.

The incident reportedly occurred around 11:40 a.m., although the exact number of occupants affected could not be immediately confirmed.

Residents and bystanders gathered at the scene shortly after the collapse, expressing concern over those believed to be trapped.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said emergency responders, including security operatives, have arrived at the scene for rescue operation.

LASTMA said an excavator has been deployed to assist in the rescue of persons trapped within the collapsed structure.

“Emergency response agencies, men of the Nigerian police, Nigerian Navy personnel, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, and PHCN personnel, are on ground coordinating rescue operations and managing the situation,” the agency said.

“An excavator has been deployed to assist in the rescue of persons trapped within the collapsed structure.”

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, and there was no official information on casualties.
