Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have killed five people, including four children, in northern and eastern Syria, authorities said on Thursday.

Five others remain missing.

Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said four children drowned in the Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor governorates, while a man died in an accident at a bridge in Raqqa.

The state-run SANA news agency reported that heavy rainfall caused a bridge to collapse in Raqqa, forcing the closure of a road connecting the region to neighbouring Aleppo.

The ministry said the storms had affected parts of the country since Wednesday, bringing intense rainfall and strong winds.

Local authorities and state media reported that the flooding submerged homes, forced residents to leave their communities and disrupted road access in several areas.

Experts say climate change has reduced overall rainfall in Syria, while rainstorms have become more irregular and difficult to predict.
