Nottingham Forest significantly boosted their chances of Premier League survival with a dominant 3-1 victory over a struggling Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge.

Taiwo Awoniyi celebrated his 100th appearance for Forest by scoring twice, opening the account with a header in the second minute and adding another after the break.

Igor Jesus further extended the lead with a first-half penalty after Malo Gusto was penalised for a foul in the box.

Despite a late, spectacular bicycle kick from Joao Pedro, Chelsea’s performance was widely viewed as lacklustre and shambolic.

The defeat leaves Chelsea in ninth place and nearly eliminates their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

The Blues have now suffered six consecutive league defeats for the first time since 1993, falling 10 points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa with only three games remaining.

While they retain a mathematical chance of qualifying if they finish sixth and specific European results go their way, they currently sit four points behind sixth-placed Bournemouth.

The match was further marred by a missed penalty from Cole Palmer and a serious head injury to teenager Jesse Derry, who was stretchered off the field.

In contrast, Nottingham Forest’s third straight win moved them six points clear of the relegation zone, leaving them just four points away from guaranteed safety.

Manager Pereira’s decision to make eight changes to the lineup proved successful, as he sought to balance league survival with an upcoming Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa.

Now unbeaten in 10 matches across all competitions, Forest are on the verge of reaching their first European final since 1980.

Meanwhile, Chelsea face ongoing instability following the April sacking of Liam Rosenior, who lasted just 106 days in the role.
