Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to salvage a 2-2 draw for Chelsea at Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday, but Enzo Maresca was left frustrated by what he called “silly” defensive errors.
The London club, who were expected to dominate in Baku, were instead forced to fight back after being stunned by its determined opponents.
Chelsea had taken an early advantage through Estevao Willian, yet Qarabag responded impressively, with Leandro Andrade levelling the score before Marko Jankovic converted a penalty to put the Azerbaijani side in front. Garnacho eventually restored parity in the second half with a composed finish that denied the hosts a famous win.
The result leaves both teams on seven points from four matches, each still pushing for a place in the top eight, which would secure direct qualification to the last 16.
Despite Chelsea’s enormous transfer spending — more than £1.5 billion in the past three seasons- they were matched by a side whose total recruitment spend over the same period has not reached £7 million.

Chelsea struggled to assert themselves and has now gone more than two years without a Champions League victory away from home. Maresca criticised the lack of composure in key moments, saying the goals conceded were avoidable and the finishing wasteful.
The evening had begun positively when 18-year-old Estevao, becoming the third-youngest player to score in each of his first two Champions League starts, put the Premier League club in front after 16 minutes.
However, carelessness soon crept in. Camilo Duran robbed Jorrel Hato of possession before Andrade scored on the rebound after striking the post. Further panic in defence led to a handball by Hato, and Jankovic coolly dispatched the resulting spot-kick.
Maresca made sweeping changes at half-time, introducing Garnacho, Enzo Fernández and Liam Delap in an effort to regain control. The switch paid off almost immediately, with Delap setting up Garnacho to unleash a powerful strike past Mateusz Kochalski.
Chelsea pressed hard late on, with Fernández twice going close and Garnacho denied from close range, but Qarabag, once derided during their first Champions League campaign, showed just how far they have come by holding firm until the final whistle.
The English side, who had travelled overnight and rotated heavily, were left to rue another missed opportunity on the road in Europe.
