German Police have arrested a 33-year-old Ukrainian man on Thursday, suspected of spying on a Bavarian arms manufacturer in preparation for possible sabotage.
According to Bavaria police, the suspect was detained on August 2 in Thuringia state and is accused of acting as a “low-level agent” for a foreign intelligence service.
Investigators believe the man took photographs of the arms company in June and shared them with suspected handlers as part of the alleged operation.
Police said the suspect has been placed in custody while awaiting trial.
The investigation is being handled under Germany’s new national centre established to coordinate responses to “hybrid attacks”, including sabotage, espionage and disinformation campaigns.
German officials have warned of growing security threats, particularly linked to suspected Russian influence operations.
The arrest comes a day after an explosives-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig-Halle Airport, which Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described as a “hybrid attack scenario” marking “a new level of danger.”
Authorities have continued to increase security measures as Germany investigates possible foreign-backed activities targeting critical infrastructure and defence-related facilities.
