Heavy traffic congestion crippled movement along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja on Saturday as thousands of delegates and supporters gathered for the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The massive turnout caused gridlock across adjoining roads and major intersections within the Central Area, leaving many motorists stranded for several hours.

Traders were also seen occupying road shoulders and open spaces around the convention venue, taking advantage of the large crowd to sell food, drinks and other items to attendees.

Supporters linked to the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient movements filled the area with songs, chants and celebrations, making access to the venue difficult for guests and commuters.

Security personnel were deployed around the convention ground to control the crowd and ease traffic as political activities intensified.

The development comes following a major decision by the NDC to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a move observers believe could significantly influence opposition politics ahead of the next general election.

Delegates at the convention unanimously adopted the resolution after a motion presented by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Constituency in Anambra State.

The arrangement is widely expected to strengthen the chances of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern contenders within the emerging opposition coalition.
