Lebanon and Israel are to hold new peace talks in Washington starting on May 14, as their latest ceasefire -- considered to still be in place despite hundreds of deaths in Israeli strikes -- nears its end. Hezbollah said on Thursday that it targeted Israeli troops in northern Israel with a drone as Lebanon and Israel continued a fresh round of direct talks in Washington.

In a statement, the group said it “targeted a gathering of Israeli enemy army soldiers at the Rosh HaNikra site” near the Lebanon border using a drone.

Earlier, the Israeli military said “several Israeli civilians were injured and evacuated to receive medical treatment” after “an explosive drone launched by the Hezbollah terrorist organisation landed within Israeli territory near the Israel-Lebanon border.”

The Galilee Medical Center confirmed that four people sustained injuries “following an explosive drone strike in the parking area of the Rosh HaNikra site.”

The attack occurred as Lebanon and Israel, which have officially remained at war for decades, held another round of talks in Washington, their third meeting in a month.

Representatives of both countries last met on April 23 at the White House, where Donald Trump announced a three-week extension of the truce in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict and expressed optimism about a possible breakthrough agreement between the two sides.

Despite the truce, which has technically remained in effect since April 17 and is expected to expire on Sunday if no agreement is reached, Israel and Hezbollah have continued exchanging attacks.

The Iran-backed group has strongly opposed direct negotiations, with Hezbollah lawmaker Ali Ammar saying on Thursday that such talks amounted to “free concessions” to Israel.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern parts of the country on Thursday, including locations not listed in an earlier Israeli evacuation warning.

The Israeli military said it had “struck more than 65 Hezbollah infrastructure sites in several areas in southern Lebanon” within the past 24 hours.

Hezbollah entered the regional conflict on March 2 after launching rocket attacks at Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes two days earlier.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks since then have killed more than 2,800 people in Lebanon, including over 400 deaths recorded since April 17.
