Idle Power Line Caused 2025 Los Angeles Wildfire

Sparks from an idle transmission tower owned by Southern California Edison (SCE) ignited dry brush and sparked the deadly Eaton Fire in January 2025, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department report released Tuesday.

Following an 18-month investigation, experts concluded that electrical arcing on a decommissioned tower—which had been out of service for decades but remained energised by nearby high-voltage lines—ejected burning metal particles into surrounding vegetation, triggering a blaze that killed 19 people and destroyed thousands of structures.

SCE has already accepted responsibility and established a dedicated recovery fund, distributing over $375 million to victims to avert lengthy litigation.

The utility’s equipment has repeatedly drawn scrutiny during California’s climate-driven wildfire crises; investigators previously linked SCE power lines to the deadly 2018 Woolsey Fire in Malibu and the 2020 Bobcat Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains, for which the supplier paid an $82.5 million settlement in May 2025.
