The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision follows a review conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which assessed the incident alongside other internal disciplinary processes.
The IGP, speaking at an emergency briefing in Abuja, said the officer involved and his team have been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The police panel determined that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
The committee subsequently recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable in the incident.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP said.
The IGP has endorsed the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in accordance with due process.
He reaffirmed, in the strongest terms, that the Nigeria Police Force operates a zero-tolerance policy on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
The IGP extended his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that the matter would be treated with utmost seriousness.
He added that the Force remains fully committed to ensuring that justice is both served and seen to be served, in a manner that strengthens public confidence and institutional accountability.
IGP Disu also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to discipline, professionalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity, while ensuring accountability at all levels.
The extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by the ASP has triggered widespread outrage online.
According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
