Leaders of Ijaw and Urhobo communities in Delta State have warned that months of delay in implementing a Supreme Court-ordered electoral delineation could trigger unrest, accusing federal authorities of broken promises.

Godspower Ghenekama Fiyewei of Gbaramatu Kingdom said during a press conference on Monday that his community has exercised restraint while waiting for the delineation to be carried out, but that patience is running out.

“We have tried our best to ensure that women, youths, elders and everybody keep the calm because there was a promise both from the NSA office and the DSS office that this matter is going to be dealt with,” Fiyewei said. “About nine months going, nothing has happened.”

He said the delay affects communities whose resources sustain the nation.

“We want to state clearly that we are tired of talking to our youths. We are tired of talking to the women. The storm is building and very soon it will blow this nation away,” he warned.

Fiyewei also directed a message to President Bola Tinubu, saying, “President Emilokan, if you want to favour your in-laws, we are also your in-laws. You will not take our resources to feed your wife and your family. Our women will resist it. Our mothers will resist it. Our youths will resist it. Our leaders will resist it,” he said.

Victor Okumagba, an Urhobo leader, said the delayed implementation risks repeating past electoral tensions in Warri.

“History is about to repeat itself as the nation has not learned the lesson of history,” Okumagba said.

He blamed corruption, tribal biases, and government influence on INEC for the delay.

“INEC is refusing to implement its own report and thereby blocking the road to peace,” he said.

Okumagba warned that denying people ballot access could force them to seek other means.

“A people denying the ballot and undue political participation and representation will seek other roads. That is not a threat, it is history,” he said.

He said the communities have exhausted legal means, including a Supreme Court judgment on the delineation exercise.

“We have no other option than to take our destiny in our hands. We shall use all possible necessary measures to ensure that there is no election,” Okumagba said.

“We will use all possible means necessary to ensure that there is no election in Warri federal constituency of Delta State in 2027.”

He called on INEC to immediately release and implement the report to restore peace.
