FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended plans on Wednesday to launch a private commercial subsidiary, calling the controversial proposal “an opportunity but not an obligation” for global football.

The initiative, named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), aims to sell stakes in major tournaments and manage sponsorship, broadcasting, licensing, and new commercial ventures.

Infantino pushed back against global backlash following the plan’s reveal on Tuesday, arguing that current structures fail to deliver adequate revenue to the regions needing it most.

Infantino emphasised that the plan requires approval from the FIFA Council and a democratic vote by all 211 member associations before implementation.

He framed the project as a necessary step to unlock previously uncaptured commercial value through outside business expertise, distinct from the governing body’s administrative duties.

Addressing supporter concerns, Infantino insisted that the core game will remain unchanged while fans worldwide benefit from enhanced global football development.
