Ipswich Town face a nervous final day in the race for Premier League promotion after being held to a 2-2 draw by Southampton on Tuesday.

The result means the second automatic promotion spot remains undecided, as Ipswich failed to secure the win that would have put them on the brink of a top-flight return.

After Wes Burns gave the visitors the lead, Southampton rallied with goals from Ryan Manning and Cyle Larin, forcing a late rescue act from Ipswich’s Jack Clarke to salvage a point in the 87th minute.

The draw leaves Ipswich just one point ahead of Millwall and two clear of fourth-placed Middlesbrough heading into the weekend.

A victory would have effectively sealed their promotion due to a superior goal difference, but they must now beat Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to guarantee a top-two finish.

Manager Kieran McKenna remained optimistic despite the missed opportunity, noting that his team was mere inches away from a winner in the dying moments of the match.

For Southampton, the stalemate officially ended their pursuit of automatic promotion, though they remain locked into the play-offs.

The high-stakes encounter, which saw Jack Clarke hit the post and a late goal ruled out for offside, highlighted the slim margins currently defining the Championship table.

As the regular season concludes, Ipswich remain in the driver’s seat but with no room for error in their final home fixture.
