Iran Claims It Stopped Three Oil Tankers in Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday they had stopped three oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions over control of one of the world’s most strategic shipping routes.

In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the vessels attempted to use a route south of the strait despite warnings from Tehran.

According to the Guards, one of the tankers struck a mine, exploded and caught fire, prompting the other two vessels to turn back before completing their journey. The statement did not specify when the incident occurred or identify the ships involved.

The IRGC accused the United States of encouraging the vessels to use the route, describing the tankers as being “provoked and tempted” by the US military.

“The Strait of Hormuz is under our control, and any ship that intends to pass without coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran will suffer the same fate,” the Guards warned.

The claim follows heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over the waterway, a vital global oil transit route.

In recent weeks, Iran has reportedly targeted tankers travelling close to the Omani coast, allegedly seeking to force vessels into Iranian waters where they would require Tehran’s approval for safe passage.
