Iran has offered to lift its restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz without addressing its nuclear ambitions.
The two regional officials disclosed this proposal on Monday. Additionally, Iran wants the United States to lift its blockade, and the proposal has been passed to Washington through Pakistan, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential.
US President Donald Trump is unlikely to agree because he insists that Iran’s nuclear programme must be part of any deal to reopen the Strait and reach a lasting ceasefire.
“We hold all the cards, if they want to negotiate, they can come to us or call.” Trump said during an interview with Fox News Channel.
The closure of the Strait has pushed up oil and petrol prices just before key midterm elections. Trump’s Gulf allies, who rely on the waterway for their own exports, are also feeling the pressure. Worldwide, the closure has raised the cost of fertiliser, food and other essential goods. The new proposal would put off discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme to a later time.
