Iran’s military said on Friday that it fired warning missiles at two United States destroyers operating in the Gulf of Oman, claiming the vessels withdrew from the area following the incident.

According to a statement carried by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, the action was taken in response to what Tehran described as maritime harassment and the seizure of commercial ships and oil tankers by US naval forces.

Iranian authorities said the destroyers left the Gulf of Oman after the warning missiles were launched.

However, the US military rejected the claim, insisting that no Iranian attack or missile launch had targeted US Navy warships.

“Iranian forces did NOT attack or fire at US Navy warships. Doing so would be a gross violation of the ceasefire,” the US Central Command said.

The US Central Command also maintained that American forces continued to operate freely in regional waters while enforcing measures against Iranian maritime activities.

The conflicting accounts mark the latest tension surrounding a ceasefire announced on April 8, which largely halted hostilities between Iran, the United States and Israel following the outbreak of war on February 28.

Diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict have so far failed to produce a breakthrough despite direct and indirect negotiations.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington had ended sustained military operations against Iran, noting that Operation Epic Fury, the US campaign against Tehran, had concluded.

He also said the operation had severely weakened Iran’s conventional air and naval capabilities.

Since the conflict began, Iran has maintained a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route linking the Gulf to the Indian Ocean. The United States later imposed its own blockade targeting Iranian ports.

Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passed through the strategically important waterway.
