Italian rescue teams have recovered 10 bodies after a migrant boat carrying around 60 people capsized near Malta, according to a statement from the Italian Coast Guard on Sunday.

The vessel, which reportedly departed from Libya, overturned about 45 nautical miles east-southeast of Malta while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

The coastguard said a fishing boat operating in the area managed to rescue about 48 people alive.

Following the incident, the Italian Coast Guard immediately deployed a patrol vessel to the scene. So far, rescue teams have recovered 10 bodies from the water.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing under the coordination of Maltese authorities as efforts continue to locate any remaining missing passengers.

The Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes, with thousands of migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings from North Africa to Europe each year.
