Rached Ghannouchi, the imprisoned leader of Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahdha party, has been hospitalised after what his party described as a serious deterioration in his health.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, Ennahdha said the 84-year-old was moved from prison to hospital following a sudden decline in his condition and has since been placed under medical supervision.

The party did not specify when he was admitted or provide details of his medical condition, but said the transfer was carried out urgently by prison authorities.

It also called for his release, insisting that he should not be in detention and describing his continued imprisonment as unjust.

Ghannouchi, a long-standing political figure in Tunisia, was arrested in 2023 and has since been sentenced to more than 40 years in prison over multiple charges, including allegations linked to “conspiracy against state security.”

He previously spent two decades in exile before returning after the 2011 Arab Spring, which ushered in democratic reforms in Tunisia.

His party later won elections and played a central role in the country’s political sector before President Kais Saied’s power consolidation in 2021.
