A nationwide power outage hit Jamaica on Friday, the country’s energy minister said, without immediately giving a cause for the disruption.
Daryl Vaz confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as an “island-wide blackout.”

He said electricity was expected to be restored overnight, adding that some parts of the country had already begun to regain power.

“All power stations are being restarted,” he said.
The national utility, Jamaica Public Service Company, said it was investigating the cause of the outage, according to a statement shared by Vaz and Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Vaz said a full investigation would be carried out into what he described as an “unacceptable outage” by the utility provider.
