Japanese authorities issued a tsunami advisory on Monday across large sections of Japan’s Pacific coastline after a major earthquake struck off the Philippines.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that tsunami waves of up to one metre (three feet) were expected to reach different coastal regions from 11:30 am (0230 GMT).

It warned that the waves could affect multiple areas along the Pacific coast and urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert and follow official guidance.

The advisory followed the powerful offshore earthquake in the Philippines, which triggered wider regional tsunami warnings across the western Pacific.

Japanese officials said they were closely monitoring sea level changes and seismic data to assess the potential impact on coastal communities.

Authorities also advised people in low-lying coastal zones to stay away from the shoreline and to be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions worsened, as precautionary measures were put in place while the situation developed.
