Kenya’s energy regulator increased maximum retail fuel prices on Wednesday, blaming rising Middle East import costs for the hike.

The East African nation, which imports almost all of its fuel from the Middle East, raised petrol prices by 6 per cent and diesel prices by 4.5 per cent.

Between October 15 and November 14, motorists in Nairobi will pay 227.76 Kenyan shillings ($1.76) per litre of diesel, up from 217.86 shillings, while kerosene prices will jump to 219.87 shillings from 191.38 shillings.

To cushion the economic blow across vital sectors like agriculture, transport, and construction, the government extended a reduced 8 per cent value-added tax on fuel until January 14.
