Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has endorsed the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s (NDC) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as consistent with the party’s power-sharing arrangement.
Kwankwaso spoke on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Abuja, where he addressed delegates, supporters and other stakeholders.
He said the decision would allow the South to complete its expected eight-year tenure under the zoning formula agreed within the party.
The former governor also urged Nigerians and party members to intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling on supporters to register with the party.
“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to Southern so that the region can complete its eight years.
“This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.
“Please register now,” he said.

His endorsement came shortly after the NDC formally adopted a resolution zoning its presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year term.
The resolution was approved during the convention following a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State.
Speaking at the convention, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was designed to promote balance and fairness within the opposition coalition.
He added that the presidential ticket would return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the completion of the South’s tenure.
The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the National Working Committee during the convention.
The zoning arrangement is expected to strengthen the position of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
The development comes following ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition figures intensify efforts to build a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
