Lagos Deploys Rescue Team to Ogun Building Collapse

The Lagos State Government has deployed emergency responders and heavy rescue equipment to assist ongoing rescue and recovery efforts following the collapse of a three-storey building in Ajuwon, Ogun State, where three people have been confirmed dead.

The building, located on Baale Road, collapsed on Monday after a heavy downpour and thunderstorm. It housed two shops on the ground floor and residential apartments on the upper floors.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the deployment followed a request for assistance from the Ogun State Government.

He explained that the intervention was approved as part of efforts to strengthen inter-state emergency response and collaboration.

LASEMA said its rescue team, supported by specialised heavy-duty equipment, joined officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Ogun State Fire Service and other emergency responders at the scene on Tuesday morning.

Providing an update on the operation, the agency said 12 people had been rescued alive, while three others were confirmed dead.

According to LASEMA, the victims comprised an adult woman, a baby girl and a 75-year-old man.

The agency said rescue and recovery operations were still underway.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the intervention demonstrated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to regional cooperation in emergency management, noting that disasters often require coordinated responses beyond state boundaries.

He added that the deployment aligns with international best practices on mutual aid and collaborative disaster response.

The LASEMA boss also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, wished the injured a speedy recovery and commended all emergency personnel involved in the rescue operation.

He reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to working with the Federal Government, NEMA and other South-West states to strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster response across the region.
