The Lagos State Government has sealed 14 properties in Ikotun, Ikoyi, Isheri-Osun, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Amuwo-Odofin over alleged illegal discharge of untreated sewage and other wastewater management violations.
The enforcement was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office as part of intensified monitoring efforts to curb the indiscriminate disposal of untreated wastewater.
According to a statement by the state government, the action followed complaints from residents as well as findings from routine monitoring and investigations by officials of the agency.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office said the exercise was aimed at protecting public health, preserving the environment and ensuring compliance with the state’s wastewater management regulations.
Properties linked to sewage violations
The General Manager of the agency, Adefemi Afolabi, said the affected properties were found discharging untreated sewage from septic tanks and other wastewater systems into public drains, ongoing drainage works and surrounding areas.
He said some of the violations involved broken or dilapidated sewer chambers, illegally connected sewer pipes and the deliberate pumping of septic tank contents into public drainage channels.
According to Afolabi, the practices had resulted in foul odours, faecal contamination and environmental nuisance, while potentially exposing residents to public health risks.

Lagos Warns Against Illegal Wastewater Discharge
Afolabi said the agency would continue to take action against practices that expose residents and communities to environmental and health risks.
“Wastewater management is not optional. It is a public health responsibility. Where untreated sewage is deliberately discharged into public drains or the environment, the consequences go beyond the property involved. It creates environmental nuisance, exposes communities to health risks and undermines the State’s efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos,” he said.
The general manager stressed that the enforcement exercise was not targeted at any particular location or property category.
He said property owners, residents, facility managers and businesses were expected to comply with approved wastewater management practices.

“We will continue to respond to credible complaints and act wherever our investigations establish violations. Our commitment is to ensuring that wastewater generated by residential, commercial and institutional properties is properly contained, treated and disposed of through approved channels,” Afolabi added.
The agency also urged residents to report suspected cases of illegal wastewater discharge and other environmental infractions.
It said timely reports would assist its officials in investigating and addressing violations across the state.
