Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has threatened legal action against a social media user for allegedly sharing a flood video from Bangladesh and falsely claiming it was recorded in Lagos.

Although the user has since deleted the post on X, Wahab said removing it does not shield him from the consequences of spreading misinformation.

“Taking down the post after misleading the public does not absolve you of the responsibility,” the commissioner wrote on Tuesday.

“Appropriate legal action will still be pursued, and this matter will be taken to its logical conclusion in accordance with the law. Thank you for your understanding.”

In another post, Wahab said the deliberate spread of false information and misleading narratives undermines the Lagos State Government’s efforts and erodes the credibility of genuine complaints raised by residents.

He added that while the government respects citizens’ right to freedom of expression, that right must be exercised responsibly.

“While we acknowledge and respect everyone’s right to freedom of expression, it is important to recognise that every right comes with corresponding responsibilities and legal limits,” he said.
