English Premier League side Manchester United has secured a return to the UEFA Champions League after a dramatic 3–2 victory over Liverpool FC at Old Trafford, with Kobbie Mainoo delivering the decisive moment late in the match.

United made a blistering start, racing into a two-goal lead within the opening 15 minutes. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the box that deflected off Alexis Mac Allister, leaving goalkeeper Freddie Woodman stranded. Moments later, Benjamin Sesko bundled the ball over the line after a precise attacking move initiated by Bruno Fernandes.

Despite their early dominance, United’s control began to slip, and Liverpool responded strongly in the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai capitalised on a misplaced pass, running unchallenged from midfield before calmly finishing to reduce the deficit. The equaliser soon followed, as Szoboszlai turned provider, setting up Cody Gakpo for a simple tap-in after another defensive lapse.

United, however, regained composure in the closing stages. A poor clearance from Mac Allister fell kindly to Mainoo, who struck from the edge of the box with precision to restore the lead. The England midfielder, recently rewarded with a five-year contract after being overlooked earlier under Ruben Amorim, marked the moment with a composed and decisive finish.

The victory sees United move six points clear of Liverpool in third place, confirming a top-five finish and Champions League qualification after a two-year absence.

Under Michael Carrick, who took charge in January, the team’s resurgence has been notable, with key wins over top rivals strengthening his case to remain in charge next season.
