French captain Kylian Mbappe has broken his silence on Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla’s racist tirade against him, and he did not hold back.
The France captain took to X on Monday with a blistering statement directed straight at the senator, calling her a “despicable woman unworthy of her position” and accusing her of dragging her country’s name through the mud after France’s Round of 16 win over Paraguay.
“You do not represent Paraguay; this country sweated with passion and honour throughout the competition,” Mbappe wrote, before turning up the heat. He argued that the senator’s lack of accountability and shameless racism had overshadowed the historic performance and effort displayed by Paraguay’s players at the World Cup, replacing it instead with what he called the image of an incompetent official embarrassing her own nation.
The storm began after Paraguay’s elimination from the tournament, when Amarilla launched a string of posts mocking Mbappe’s background and appearance. Among her comments, she dismissed France’s victory as mere luck while questioning Mbappe’s origins, appearance and character, at one point making racist remarks about his education and origins and encouraging a contemptuous gesture toward him, boasting that she does the same in the Senate.
The remarks reportedly followed a viral moment in which Mbappe was seen cursing in Spanish at Paraguayan defender Junior Alonso, with Amarilla also accused of claiming Mbappe showed poor sportsmanship by not shaking hands with goalkeeper Orlando Gil.
The backlash was swift. Fans, pundits and anti-racism organisations condemned the senator’s comments as inexcusable for a public figure, with many describing them as a blatant display of racism and xenophobia that overshadowed what should have been a moment of celebration for football.
Neither FIFA nor the Paraguayan Football Association had issued a formal response to the controversy.
France, meanwhile, has moved on to sporting matters, turning its attention to a quarterfinal clash with Morocco.
