A shooting in a Jewish neighbourhood of Montreal on Monday has left three people dead, including a police officer, a civilian resident, and the suspected attacker, according to local police authorities.

The incident unfolded shortly before midday in the Côte-des-Neiges area, a densely populated district that includes kosher restaurants, supermarkets, and residential buildings frequented by Montreal’s large Jewish community. Police said officers were quickly deployed to the scene, with a police helicopter also seen circling overhead as the area was secured.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the Montreal police service said in a statement posted on X. The force also confirmed that a suspect and a resident were killed during the incident. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the civilian victim.

Public broadcaster Radio Canada reported that another police officer was seriously injured in the shooting, though officials have not independently confirmed further details on their condition.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police said investigations are ongoing and urged residents to stay away from the affected area as emergency operations continued.

Quebec’s public security minister Ian Lafreniere warned the public to avoid the vicinity, saying, “People should not be going out.” He added that a crisis unit had been activated and officials were “on the ground,” but stressed that investigators do not yet understand what motivated the attacker.

“For now, we don’t really know what the motive of this individual was,” Lafreniere said.

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette described herself as “deeply shaken by the tragic events that occurred today in the Côte-des-Neiges area,” urging restraint in public commentary. “It is essential to allow the authorities to do their work and to avoid speculation,” she added.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a major Canadian advocacy organisation, said it was “closely monitoring the situation,” calling for vigilance among community members as authorities continue their investigation into what has become a deadly and still-unexplained attack in a residential urban neighbourhood.
