Morocco booked their place in the last 16 of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey on Monday.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved decisive, saving the Netherlands’ fifth penalty from Crysencio Summerville before Ismael Saibari converted the winning spot-kick to seal Morocco’s progress.
The victory sets up a last-16 meeting with Canada in Houston on Saturday.
The Dutch had looked set for victory after Cody Gakpo put them ahead midway through the second half. The Liverpool forward, playing days after the loss of his unborn child, celebrated emotionally with teammates after scoring.
Morocco, however, forced extra time when Issa Diop headed home in the opening minute of stoppage time from a cross by substitute Chemsdine Talbi.

The North Africans created the better chances for much of the match, with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen making several important saves to deny efforts from Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi.
The Netherlands came closest before halftime through Micky van de Ven, whose long-range effort was tipped over by Bounou.
After the break, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman introduced Wout Weghorst, whose flick-on helped create the opening goal for Gakpo.
Morocco nearly found a winner in extra time, but Verbruggen produced another outstanding save to deny Soufiane Rahimi in a one-on-one situation.
The match eventually went to penalties, where Morocco recovered from an early miss by El Aynaoui to secure victory and advance to the knockout stage.
