The Kogi State Government has banned commercial motorcycle operations in parts of Bunu District, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, as part of new security measures targeted at cutting off supply routes used by bandits and other criminal groups operating in the area.

The measures were announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, following a review of ongoing security operations in Bunu District of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

According to the government, security forces have recorded major successes after recently repelling an attack on Iluke community. Several attackers were reportedly killed, while others were injured and remain trapped in forest areas as security operations continue.

To prevent criminals from receiving supplies, the government has imposed an immediate ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, in several communities across the Bunu hinterlands.

Authorities said intelligence reports revealed that some motorcycle operators were being used to transport food, water, drugs, fuel and other supplies to bandits hiding in the forests.

“Investigations have also established that some criminal elements utilize motorcycle transportation to conduct reconnaissance and gather intelligence on targeted communities before launching attacks,” the statement said.

The ban affects routes linking several communities, including Idoyi Bunu, Illah Bunu, Iluke Bunu, Kiri, Odai Bunu, Igbo Bunu, Ilogun Bunu, Olle Bunu, Ayede Bunu, Oke-Ofin Bunu and Edumo Bunu.

The government warned that any motorcycle rider found transporting passengers, goods or supplies along the affected routes would be arrested and prosecuted under the Kogi State Anti-Terrorism Law.

Additionally, all markets along the affected corridors have been closed until further notice.

Mobile medicine vendors have also been directed to stop transporting and selling drugs on motorcycles in the affected areas.

The state government further announced a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel in jerricans across Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen security, Kogi has also prohibited night travel on all state-owned roads.

“Consequently, all movements on state roads must cease by 7:00 pm daily until further notice,” the government stated.

The government said anyone found travelling on state-owned roads after 7:00 pm would be arrested and prosecuted.

Officials added that security agencies possess credible intelligence on individuals allegedly supporting criminal groups and assured residents that appropriate action is being taken against such persons.

While acknowledging that the restrictions may cause temporary inconvenience, the government said the measures are necessary to protect lives and communities and deny criminals the resources needed to continue their activities.
