Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has pushed back against claims linking recent violence in the state to religious conflict, insisting that such narratives are misleading.

Mutfwang said this on Tuesday at the state house during an interview with News Central TV.

Speaking on the situation, the governor stressed that attacks in parts of the state should not be confused with acts of terrorism driven by religion.

“People tend to mix it up with acts of terrorism. I am not sure that there is any Muslim who imported terrorists to attack people. These are clearly issues that need to be treated separately,” he said.

The Governor explained that his administration is focused on dialogue and inclusion, creating platforms for conversations among different groups to address tensions and restore peace. He said;

“As a government, we see our duty as one of equity, fairness, and inclusion. That is what we have tried to do.”

He also highlighted his government’s efforts to bridge divides across religious lines, noting that appointments and leadership positions reflect the state’s diversity.

“Since coming on board, we have done things to break barriers across faith,” he stated.

The governor pointed out that key positions in the state currently reflect this approach. According to him, the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly is a Muslim from Plateau East, while the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state is also a Muslim.

He said that despite Muslims being a minority among local government chairmen, inclusive leadership remains a priority.

Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unity, urging residents to avoid narratives that could deepen divisions and instead support efforts focused on lasting peace.
