NAF Strengthens Fleet with M-346 Jets

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has achieved a significant milestone in its fleet modernisation efforts with the successful completion of the Factory Acceptance Test for its first three M-346 Fighter Attack aircraft.

The evaluation took place at the Leonardo Aircraft Division facility in Venegono, Italy, confirming that the jets meet the required contractual, technical, and airworthiness standards.

According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, the aircraft, designated NAF 01, NAF 02, and NAF 03, are now cleared for induction into the NAF inventory as part of its growing fleet of advanced air combat platforms.

“The completion of the acceptance process ensures these aircraft are fully compliant and ready for operational deployment,” he said.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, described the M-346 as a strategic asset that will enhance Nigeria’s airpower capabilities. He noted that the aircraft combine advanced pilot training functionality with frontline combat capacity, significantly boosting the Service’s ability to generate combat-ready aircrew.

“These jets expand our capacity for precision strike, close air support, air interdiction, and other critical air operations in response to evolving national security challenges,” Aneke added.

The successful Factory Acceptance Test also highlights the government’s commitment, under President Bola Tinubu, to strengthening the operational readiness of Nigeria’s Armed Forces through the acquisition of modern, technologically advanced, and mission-ready platforms.

Analysts note that the M-346 fleet will not only improve training efficiency for NAF pilots but also contribute to greater national security resilience, positioning Nigeria among the few African nations operating such advanced combat aircraft.

This milestone reflects a broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s air capabilities, ensuring the Air Force can respond swiftly and effectively to emerging security threats while maintaining operational superiority in the region.
