The Nigerian Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Wednesday on behalf of the Nigerian Government, with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, signing it. He also congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary.
Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria’s diversity, people and natural resources remain important to the country’s progress. He described Nigeria as a leading black nation and a source of pride in Africa. The minister also highlighted the Nigerian Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Tinubu.

The minister urged Nigerians to promote peace, unity and patriotism during the Independence celebrations. He said peace and stability are necessary for national development. The minister also called on citizens to follow the example of Nigeria’s founding fathers by showing greater commitment to the country. He urged Nigerians to build a nation that future generations will be proud of.
Tunji-Ojo said the challenges facing the country could be overcome through collective effort.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.

The minister said the Tinubu administration would continue working towards a better Nigeria through its Renewed Hope Agenda. He said the government’s efforts would honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s past heroes.
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the celebration to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. He assured citizens that the Nigerian Government would continue to strengthen national security and improve public safety.
The minister said the government was also committed to creating a safer environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.
