Nigerian troops killed at least 18 terrorists during coordinated operations in Borno state, the military said on Wednesday.

Military spokesperson Sani Uba said troops, air force units and local auxiliaries carried out offensives in the Timbuktu axis and Bulabulin forest.

Uba said 11 terrorists were killed in Bulabulin and seven in the Timbuktu area.

The operations are part of a campaign following a recent attack on military bases that killed several soldiers, including senior officers, Uba said.

He said air support provided surveillance and strikes and that follow-up operations were ongoing to track people escaping the area.

Borno state has experienced conflict for 17 years. Authorities say thousands of people have been killed and two million displaced.
