Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.

Nuhu Usman, a police officer, killed Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, when operatives of the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway after Ogidi was apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

The shooting incident has triggered outrage, and Usman was transferred to the Force headquarters in Abuja.

Obi, in a statement on X, reacted to the incident and called for justice. Obi described the incident as “barbaric” and a “grave violation of the rule of law”.

“Over time, human society has moved away from an era when lives could be taken without consequence. Through the evolution of civilisation, a fundamental principle has emerged: no one should be punished or deprived of life without due process and a fair determination of guilt,” said Obi.

He added that such acts inflict trauma on the bereaved family and deepen public anxiety in Nigeria.

“Nigerians are already traumatised by recurring reports of brutal killings by terror organisations across the country, and incidents of this nature – especially when involving state actors – only worsen that psychological burden and erode public confidence in safety and security.”

He applauded the police for their prompt response and urged them to uphold transparency and accountability in the administration of justice. Obi also called for a rigorous recruitment process to ensure that only individuals of sound judgment and the right frame of mind are entrusted with firearms.
