World football governing body FIFA has confirmed that former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha holds the record for the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup match, cementing his status as one of the most skilful players the game has ever produced.

According to FIFA, Okocha completed 15 successful dribbles against Italy during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

The feat was achieved against one of the most celebrated defensive units of that era, featuring Italian legends Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Demetrio Albertini.

“Jay-Jay Okocha holds the record for the most successful dribbles in a World Cup game: 15 in the 15th edition at USA 1994,” FIFA wrote.

“The Nigeria magician admirably did it against defensive specialists Italy in the last 16, going past the likes of Demetrio Albertini, Alessandro Costacurta and Paolo Maldini among others.”

The record remains unequalled in World Cup history. In second place are Brazil’s Jairzinho, with 13 dribbles against Uruguay in 1970, and England’s Paul Gascoigne, with 13 dribbles against Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup.

Only nine players have recorded 12 successful dribbles in a single match to complete the all-time list, including Portugal’s Eusebio (1966), West Germany’s Reinhard Libuda (1970), the Netherlands’ Johan Cruyff (1974), Italy’s Sandro Mazzola (1974), Argentina’s Diego Maradona (1986) and Germany’s Jamal Musiala (2022).

FIFA also stated that Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi holds the record for the most successful dribbles across all World Cup appearances combined, with 125 take-ons completed in his tournament career.

The late Maradona holds the record for the most dribbles in a single World Cup edition, with 53 at Mexico 1986.

Okocha, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, earned 73 caps for Nigeria and scored 14 international goals. He was known for his exceptional ball control and flair on the pitch.
