Osun State Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, has been released after spending almost 24 hours in police detention over a shooting at an APC rally in Ilesa.
Adejoorin was arrested on Saturday after the shooting in the Isokun area left three people injured, including 14-year-old Tobi Ilesanmi.
The police said Adejoorin was stopped while travelling in a white Lexus 350 after officers responding to the incident saw an Amotekun operative in his vehicle.
Osun State Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the commissioner was taken to the command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning to determine his level of involvement.
“On interrogation, it was discovered that the other occupant is Honourable Mayowa Adejoorin,” Ojelabi said.
Police said four expended cartridges were recovered from the scene, while a pump-action gun was also recovered from the Amotekun operative.
According to Ojelabi, three people were injured and taken to different hospitals following the shooting.
He said the incident reportedly began when an Amotekun vehicle bearing an official Osun State Government number plate was parked near the APC rally.
The police alleged that some occupants of the vehicle opened fire, causing people at the rally to flee.
However, the APC Campaign Council for Ilesa West gave a different account, accusing people linked to the Amotekun security detail of opening fire during the rally.
The council’s head, Folarin Fafowora, said the incident happened as the rally was ending.
“We were almost rounding up when, suddenly, a car overtook us. The occupant of the car was the Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Wale Akerele,” he said.
Fafowora alleged that gunshots were fired from the vehicle and that Amotekun personnel accompanying Akerele also opened fire.
The Imole Campaign Council, however, accused APC members of shooting during the rally and attacking Accord Party supporters and property.
“The video of Ilesa shooting is all over the place. Members of the APC were shooting in the name of the rally, destroying properties that belong to the Accord members,” its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said.
According to Punch, giving an update on Sunday, Ojelabi confirmed Adejoorin’s release but said he could not confirm whether the Amotekun operative arrested alongside him had also been released.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released today but the Amotekun that was arrested with him, I can’t confirm his release yet because I am still gathering my facts,” Ojelabi said.
The police investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
