Morocco is rewriting the playbook on sports development by converting its vast underground wealth into elite athletic success.

The country’s rise in global football relies heavily on an unlikely benefactor: the state-owned fertiliser giant, OCP Group.

As the world’s largest exporter of phosphate fertiliser, OCP Group now bankrolls the national team’s development through a National Football Training Fund, propelling Moroccan football to unprecedented heights.

The transformation stems from a strategic vision to elevate the nation on the world stage.

In 2024, OCP Group joined forces with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and private funders to inject massive capital into the sport.

According to Hicham El Habti, a member of OCP’s strategic committee for innovation and learning, a royal directive drives state-owned institutions to commit deeply to the country’s development.

Cutting-Edge Training Academies

Under this mandate, the company finances cutting-edge training academies, provides advanced technical expertise, and maintains a direct partnership with FIFA.

This modern funding surge builds upon a foundation that King Mohammed VI laid in 2009.

The King initially directed the government to overhaul the nation’s football infrastructure, which sparked the construction of world-class pitches, youth academies, and stadiums.

OCP’s entry into the project supercharged these efforts. The results speak for themselves on the pitch.

The Atlas Lions shocked the world by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and the nation recently secured the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Farmers Cannot Synthesise Phosphate

The financial engine behind this success is a critical, finite agricultural resource. Unlike nitrogen fertilisers made from natural gas, farmers cannot synthesise phosphate.

Market analysts view Morocco as the undisputed bright spot in a volatile global phosphate market.

While geopolitical tensions and export restrictions cripple competitors like China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, Morocco enjoys free-flowing trade.

Furthermore, a recent decision by the U.S. administration to lift restrictions on Moroccan phosphate imports has cemented the country’s dominant economic position.

For El Habti and millions of Moroccans, this strategic reinvestment of state money yields priceless cultural dividends.

The historic 2022 World Cup run, which saw Morocco defeat football heavyweights like Spain, Portugal, and Belgium, united the nation in joy.

As the team prepares for a crucial World Cup round-of-16 clash against Canada in Houston, that same electric energy fills the streets.

El Habti notes that the investment does more than build pitches; it generates a wave of national pride and puts a smile on every citizen’s face.
