Polish authorities say they have seized more than a tonne of heroin from Iran, hidden in a shipment of decorative bricks at the Baltic port of Gdynia.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski described the operation as the largest of its kind in more than a decade, noting that it represented a significant breakthrough in the country’s anti-narcotics efforts.

The drugs, valued at about 220 million zlotys (51.8 million euros), were concealed within a brick consignment that arrived from the United Arab Emirates and were first detected by the British customs officials.

Police chief Marek Boron said investigations indicated the shipment originated from Iran. Authorities also confirmed that three Polish nationals were arrested last month in connection with the investigation and have since been charged by prosecutors in Gdansk.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, drug seizures by Poland’s Central Investigation Bureau have risen sharply in recent years, increasing by about 650 per cent since 2022.

Officials said more than 83 tonnes of drugs worth around 600 million zlotys (141.4 million euros) have already been confiscated since the beginning of 2026, compared with 29 tonnes recorded in the whole of the previous year.
